THE READER opens in post-WWII Germany when teenager Michael Berg becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair. Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read to and their physical relationship deepens. Hanna is enthralled as Michael reads to her from “The Odyssey,” “Huck Finn” and “The Lady with the Little Dog.” Despite their intense bond, Hanna mysteriously disappears one day and Michael is left confused and heartbroken. Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hanna back in his life – this time as a defendant in the courtroom. As Hanna’s past is revealed, Michael uncovers a deep secret that will impact both of their lives. THE READER is a story about truth and reconciliation, about how one generation comes to terms with the crimes of another. WALL-E is one of the best animated movies to be released in a very long time. At times it manages to be almost poetic and lyrically beautiful in its exploration of the all too familiar subject of love. As expected from Pixar Animation Studios, the movie is dazzlingly beautiful in its animation, but it’s also sublimely anchored in the central love story. The emotional arc of the story unfolds as gently as flower petals. (more…)

There’s only one reason why someone may not enjoy this feast of flourish. You’ve to hate the music of ABBA. And to hate ABBA you’ve to belong to another planet. The idea rocks. The screenwriter has strung together a kaleidoscopic cluster of ABBA’s most cherished numbers in a plot of a young girl on a scenic island who invites three of her potential fathers to her wedding. A movie is pretty much dead in the water when one of the characters in an important scene says, “You bet on me…and you made me want to bet on myself.” “What Happens in Vegas” in a way is perfect. It is perfect in the way it sticks to the supposed formula for a successful romantic comedy. But it fails miserably in making it interesting. (more…)

Hollywood regularly churns out romantic comedies and they most often disappoint. The romantic comedies of the golden era had wit, portrayed love as an adventure and had enough friction to create heat – but hardly ever any more. “Made of Honor” comes to us now as a perfect example of the formula that Hollywood employs in creating flat and unsatisfactory fares.
