Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is once again all set and geared to slate record earnings, surpassing ticket sale of Dark Knight. Wondering what this movie will unfold not only to the loyal fans of Potter saga but also ordinary viewers?

Film: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, Helena Bonhan Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange, Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore
Director: David Yates
Screenplay: Steve Kloves
Run time: 2 hours and 33 minutes
Rating: 4/5

Directed by David Yates and based on JK Rowling’s novel, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince reflects a new angle in the search against the Dark Lord.

The film involved two story threads. On one hand, Harry Potter played by Daniel Radcliffe answers to the call of Dumbledore for unraveling the dark secrets of evil, while the other includes the growing up of Harry Potter from the round-eyed boy to one of Hogwarts’ Old Boys, their adolescence, scenes of flirtation and romance.

The film opens with the shot of Harry Potter sitting late night on a London café reading a copy of Daily Prophet. The pair of eyes glued and the mind wondering as he reads between the lines of news piece that poses the question: Is Harry Potter the Chosen One? What that does mean is the obvious question for the first-time viewers of Harry Potter series, while for the rest the thrill begins and the excitement hard to conceal.

As the film draws to end, viewers will realize that the Chosen One is the person to fight it out with Lord Voldemort, a name that has been ominously chosen as in French mort stands for death and Vold implies steal or thief.

The film gears up with the subsequent scenes. On the lighter side though there is some quick eye flirtation with young waitress in the café who makes it clear that she will be waiting for Harry in the station platform after 11pm. Before Harry Potter could respond to that ogle, he will be summoned by Dumbledore. The waitress should make an appearance again in the last two parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, expected to hit the theaters in 2010 and 2011 respectively. So don’t be disappointed my friends!

Yates confirms in this movie that Harry is on a mission to discover the dark secrets of Voldemort and so he is in an underground cavern. The climax scene that takes place inside the dark cavern around a lake and a gondola, gained popularity with the release of the film The phantom of the Opera.

In this film Harry Potter and his friends encounter deeper dangers and Harry seems to learn quite more about the bees and the birds to finally defeat the Dark Lord of evil.

The director tried through several interesting scenes to establish that Harry and his friends especially poor Ron Weasley are stepping into adolescence. The transition is reflected on the celluloid in delicate ways. Hogwart also reflected less cheerful corridors and darkness seemed to cast a shadow all over.

The close working relationship between Harry and Dumbledore begins with Harry visiting Professor Horace Slughorn’s home at London who had slipped into reclusion long back to know about something about his early day student Tom Riddle. It is Tom Riddle who grew up to become the dark man whose existence rhymed with death. To get the possible key factors to unlock the ominous secret, the mission is to be continued.

The movie begins and ends with some wonderful art design and the cinematography deserves serious applause.
