Observe and Report

The movie Observe and Report is an attempt to make a cult comedy and the aim of any such film is to create spontaneous situations and present a strange experience for which the audience will develop a liking. But you may wonder after watching the movie if it really fits in the league of cult comedies.

The movie Observe and Report is a drab to say the least; it is a mockery of a cult comedy. The characters are nothing but a laughingstock who fail miserably to tickle the laugh bone or instigate any laughter and for god sake either of us would not even desire to be anything close to those characters.

The movie is set in a shopping mall that does not look genuine in any angle and the situations are out of context that makes no sense at all, losing all the purpose of exciting the audience.

The movie revolves around the catastrophic incidents faced by Ronnie Barnhardt (Sean Rogen) who plays security guard of a mall and fancies to carry firearms so that he can shoot people. He has a crush on Brandi (Anna Faris) who is a make-up girl in the department store and is troubled by a pervert.

Ronnie the loser wants to join the police force to save Brandi from this dirty guy. The motivation behind Ronnie’s intention is the detective (Ray Liotta) who is investigating the case and Brandi seems to be quite impressed by him.

The remaining characters that are close to Ronnie’s bizarre life includes a colleague (Michael Peña) who has a lisp and then you have Collette Wolfe who plays the adorable role of Christian in a wheelchair and she regularly visits the food joint and also has a crush on Ronnie, though he is rude towards her without any reason.

Ronnie’s mother (Celia Weston) is an alcoholic who urinates at night and Ronnie conveniently tucks her with the sheet instead of helping her out and this cannot be funny by any stretch of imagination. But the sad part of the movie is it deals with such “humour”.

Observe and ReportJody Hill has a unique style of featuring a comedy but it lacks the depth. It seems as if he works on the principle of how to make better out of worse. After all the trapeze Ronnie takes Brandi out on a date and predictably spends a night with her that is more like a forcible encounter. However, Brandi seems absolutely fine with the fact of being ‘raped’ as she is portrayed to be disreputable.

Hill puts up an act to have tapped the traits of his characters to the maximum extent, which he seldom has. The role of Rogen is likable in some parts, but on the whole you will feel he is nothing but a person filled with negative qualities.

Observe and Report is a debacle. Rogen is guiding the audience to fall prey to his dark secrets. By the end of the movie, there are chances you will pull out your hair or lose the sense of logic or reason. The movie is a poor attempt to tickle your funny bone for sure; it’s not your times worth and is mere waste of your penny.
