Obsessed

Inspired by the most popular film ‘Fatal Attraction,’ Stephen Shill directs the ‘Obsessed,’ a psychopathic female domestic thriller. Fatal Attraction is a movie that left indelible imprint on the viewers’ minds with some commendable and scintillating performances as well as the twisting plots. Thus, ‘Obsessed’ need to grow out this expectation to make a mark. Did it succeed in doing so?

The hero of the film Obsessed is Derek Charles played by Idris Elba who is an upcoming investment broker working for a Los Angeles marketing firm. He is good looking and happily married with a kid. His wife is gorgeous and reflects youthful radiance with vibrancy. Derek’s wife Sharon is played by Beyonce Knowles and their happiness was unperturbed and the family life bouncing with joy as they move into a spacious, oak-wood floored apartment with a shaky attic floor. So, what can go wrong in this happy-go-lucky, picture-perfect family life of Derek and Sharon?

It’s the arrival of a female assistant at Derek’s office, named Lisa played by Ali Larter. The movie essentially belongs to her. Her fist shot in the film unfolds in the scene at the elevator where she is unable to cast her eyes off Derek.

It is here that the story takes the twists and the turns, with obvious discontentment of Sharon as she wants Lisa to be fired, because she sensed trouble (female instincts). However, Lisa was in a journey to re-write the story of Derek and Sharon with an obsession that has no reason and no explanation.

Lisa is totally a psycho-obsessed individual and there is no reason as to why she is what she is. She sexually assaults Derek and Derek in his all senses does not clear things out with his wife.

ObsessedThough Derek is believable but Lisa’s actions are unbelievable as it only reflects mad obsession without any ultimate purpose. The film fails to evoke a thrilling experience as the thread of Lisa and Derek was not meshed well into the movie. Again, there wasn’t a single woman in Derek’s firm who was in a position higher-up than a secretary and that makes the film more wobbly as the shaky attic floor of Derek’s home.

Christine Lahiti plays the role of a detective and Bruce McGill portrays as Derek’s boss. However, the weirdest performance was given by Jerry O’Connell who plays as Ben, Derek’s office pal.

The film practically begs for an explanation for this kind of madness portrayed by Lisa. If Lisa and Derek had actually slept there might have been some spin to the movie, but there wasn’t any plausible reason for the movie to stir any kind of hoary senses.

Derek in no way could be compared with Michael Douglas and Derek’s senses could only be termed as fatal flirtations. An adultery plot not handled very well is what can be told about Obsessed. However, the editing deserves a mention as it’s a fine work done by veteran Paul Seydor and the post production work also is good.
