But the motion of the picture rests on an incident; and that is miscarriage of Kate. As Kate suffers the pangs of death of the unborn child, she decides to adopt one, little knowing what the future holds for them.
John agreed to Kate’s decision of adoption, as he was seeing Kate suffering terribly, physically getting weak and mentally haunted by demons from the past in some deadliest nightmares. To regain little semblance of normalcy in their daily living and as a resort to emotional healing, the couple took their first step towards an orphanage to bring home another child.
At a local orphanage, both John and Kate found themselves getting attracted towards a nine-year old girl named Esther. Apparently Esther was impeccably well-behaved, sweet-natured intelligent girl who paints well, plays piano perfect. But that is only one side of the little girl; apparently, the other side of the little one is something that’s quite eerie.
Behind the veil of the sweet façade of Esther, there was a dark side that began haunting and hurting everyone. This comes to notice when incident of tragic events begin happening as soon as Esther steps into their home.
Although Kate tried to point this out to John, it becomes futile. Kate’s warnings in most cases went unheard. In one of the scenes, Esther kills a bird to foment sibling rivalry and Kate was convinced that there exists another strand of her character.
In the midst of all these it is Kate who desperately tries everything out to bring to people’s notice that Esther has some uncanny behavior, but John, her husband dismisses her intuitions and thought. This becomes quite frustrating for Kate who seemed to know the truth.
This film is being marketed with an underlying tagline ‘There is something wrong with Esther. Now the question is will this create interest amongst the people to go and buy the ticket in the theaters or it requires more haunting promotion of scenes and shots? James Collett is QUITE happy as she feels that Esther is a special child and that both Kate and John hankered for a special one in their lives in the movie.
However, the film does not delve deep into the reasons of such abnormal behavior in the part of Esther. Again, this film is not the bloodiest one. Here you will find real horrifying events happening with people and those are real and genuine problems. The problems that would shudder and you are compelled to think and thank God that it is not happening with you. But it is definite that the acting of all the castings was much richer and perfect than the story.
