The Ugly Truth: Attempts to convey same old truth
It is a romantic comedy. The Ugly Truth fuels up a battle between a man and a woman and in the end it reveals that it is this that keeps the relationship ticking. It explores several angles with a tint of humor and use of naughty language.
Abby Ritcher is a morning talk-show producer in Sacramento who possesses sheer belief that it is perfect romanticism that would fetch the right person in her life. However, as the morning broadcast show falls low in the ratings, Abby’s boss brings in Mike Chadway who is a chauvinistic boor to advice Abby on how to improve the score of the program, as her show was near cancellation in spite of her diligence and hard work. Naturally, both Mike and Abby begin as enemies but it doesn’t need genius brains to understand where there relationship in the film is heading to.
What happens eventually is the perfect reflection of the adage; Opposite Poles attract each other. The other strand of the movie is that Abby is a woman of ravishing beauty who is still in search of that elusive love and a perfect partner. The only reason behind her still being single is her idea of romanticism and her obsessive compulsive behavior. However, amidst this a handsome young orthopedic surgeon, Colin comes into her life when she twisted her ankle. It is this chance meeting that bowled over Abby completely and she was getting desperate to be with him.
Soon it was seen that Abby was using Mike Chadway’s advice to get closer to Colin. In no time audience will realize that Mike was actually educating Abbey to have love life well knitted into her work life. It is not that Abbey is workaholic but it is true that she loves her job and wants her love life to blossom in perfection with her thoughts. She feels that she does not need to be subservient and helpless to be a choice for a man. Her belief was grounded with the idea that men loves independent woman who can speak their mind out. But, Mike was quick on understanding Abby and jumped into the mission to help her find ways to enter into Colin’s life.
In several scenes audience will laugh out to see how Mike advices Abby in earphones as she goes to see the boring surgeon neighbor just as producers do when they indeed to instruct the anchors into the earpieces. Mike advices Abby in every way he could from her dresses, her way of talking to even how she walks. He was in a mission to make Abby do things that guy loves to see, hear and know.
But, filmmakers did not traverse into the unknown territory; instead the film turns back into the same cliché where the dominant question is will the two opposite poles find attracting with each other for long. Audience might get bored to see the same turnaround as it was during the last month that The Proposal made some quick and fast bucks in the theaters.
