Up
Up is a wonderful animation film from Pixar with characters that reflected poignancy and human like emotions. The central characters of the film are an oldie couple and a nervy kid. It is not necessary that to appeal the younger generation the characters need to be youthful. This is the beauty of the director of this film Pete Docter.
Modern animation has undergone a transformation and reached a watershed with Pixar. Again the director of Pixar is one of the leading genius artists in the world of animation. He also directed Monsters Inc, was a writer for Toy Story and co-author on WALL-E.
This particular movie will be shown in 3-D and 2-D. My piece of advice is that it is better to watch the movie in 2-D to savor the color scheme that is so brightly fine tuned and meshed in the film. This particular effect of the right mix of the color with content is actually missing in its 3-D version.
The film essentially begins with a sweet romance between Ellie and Carl. Both have similar inclinations and are great admirers of adventurer Charles Muntz. Charles Muntz is on an exploration on the plateau of Venezuela in his gigantic zeppelin. He returns with bones of some creatures only to be told as fake discovery. He was outraged and decided to go back with a promise to return with living creatures to prove his point.
Eventually Ellie and Carl marry and move into a descript house only to transform it to their dream home. They are happily growing old with the background score mesmerizing the audience and there is no dialogue in the whole process. This couple was saving their loose changes in a big jug to finance their trip to the Paradise Falls but reality strikes hard and they have to use them for either home repairs, medical bills or other exigencies. However there is a touching interlude.
The film basically focuses on Carl’s life after Ellie passes away. As a widower he becomes a loner and turns their dream home into a memorial. The audience sees him talking with Ellie in her absence. One day, Carl suddenly decides to fulfill his dream of seeing Paradise Falls. All his life he worked as a balloon man and he has the equipment with him to make his dream home fly. He did it with colorful helium filled balloons. Carl does not go alone. He has Russell, the nervy kid and a wilderness explorer as a companion.
They reach paradise Falls and what happens there is for you to discover at the theater. However, a description of Charles Muntz’s ship is worth in this review. The gigantic ship owes its inspiration from Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky. There is nothing special about the exterior; it’s just a big airplane. But the interior is something that you will remember forever. Muntz who is a centenarian is well enough with his robotic dogs.
The film requires no saying that it’s awesome and the personalities involved evoke soul-stirring experiences.
